Shanita Brown

Dr. Shanita Brown is a teaching assistant professor in the Counselor Education Program at East Carolina University. Dr. Brown's research interests including examining the domestic violence experiences of Black women of faith, trauma-informed practices, and collegiate mental health. Dr. Brown spearheaded ACA’s Intimate Partner Violence Interest Network, and NCCA’s Don C. Locke Multicultural & Social Justice Award. She has published scholarly articles and featured on several podcasts and media outlets such as Essence, Parents, Self-Magazine regarding her expertise. Additionally, Dr. Brown is an award-winning EMDR-Trained Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and owner of a private practice. As a speaker, consultant and trainer, Dr. Brown believes in offering transformative dialogue about violence against women and mental health wellness.

Dr. Brown is the recipient of 2021 Jane Myers Wellness Award. Past leadership positions include NCCA Governing Board Member, Secretary, AMCD – Secretary and Board of Directors for The North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault.


 President Elect:

Ashleigh Glover

Ashleigh Glover is a licensed clinical mental health counselor based in North Carolina. After completing her graduate studies, Ms. Glover established her practice to provide mental health counseling services to the underserved rural population of Chatham County. As the county is rapidly growing, Ms. Glover is an ambassador for the Chatham County Chamber of Commerce to raise awareness about mental health. Within counseling, Ms. Glover advocates for social justice and women's rights. She embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion in her work. Glover will complete her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision by May 2025. Ms. Glover is committed to advancing the field of counseling through research.

Her dissertation proposal, titled Friend or Foe: Exploring the Black Woman’s Experience with Animal Assisted Therapy, will be completed in the next academic year. Ms. Glover’s research interests include counselor education and supervision, proactive leadership, creative-based counseling, and diversity and inclusion. During her years of service on the board, Ms. Glover has served as Graduate Division President (winning the Most Improved Division award in 2018/2019), Membership Committee Chair, NCCA Governing Council-Executive Secretary, and currently, Intern to the President. Ms. Glover is a hands-on collaborator and has excellent communication skills. Growth and change are collaborative efforts, and Ms. Glover will navigate complex conversations by engaging in effective dialogue with leaders to meet common goals and agendas. With years of experience serving on the North Carolina Counseling Association board, Ms. Glover envisions the North Carolina Counseling Association moving forward with unity, excellence, integrity, and purpose.

 



President Elect Elect:

Shon Smith

Dr. Shon D. Smith is a Mental Health Advocate, Professional Counselor, Educator, Clinical Supervisor, Veteran, and Leader with over 30 years of experience. He provides individual, couples, family, and group counseling across the lifespan and is known for his integrative approach, drawing from rational emotive behavioral therapy, structural family therapy, and liberation counseling. He also offers clinical supervision and consultation to both pre-service and professional counselors and is a dedicated educator committed to advancing inclusive, equity-driven, and community-responsive counseling practices.

Dr. Smith’s scholarship focuses on mental health disparities and public policy, counselor leadership and advocacy development, workplace mental wellness, curriculum evaluation and design, technology integration in counselor education, and supporting military personnel and their families. As a U.S. Army Veteran, he served in Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan; completed humanitarian missions in Central and South America; and supported operations stateside. He was awarded the Bronze Star for exemplary service.

He has held leadership roles at every level of the counseling profession, including past presidencies with the Pennsylvania Counseling Association (PCA), Florida Counseling Association (FCA), Counselors for Social Justice (CSJ), and the Association of Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), and served as a Board Director for the Military and Government Counseling Association (MGCA). He is a former Chair of the American Counseling Association (ACA) Southern Region and Co-Chair of the ACA Bylaws Committee. He currently chairs the NCCA Human Rights Committee and the City of Greensboro Human Rights Commission.

Dr. Smith holds a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy, a master’s degree in Rehabilitation and School Counseling, and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

 

 


 

Immediate Past President:

Kerri Legette-McCullough

Dr. Kerri Legette McCullough is a National Certified Counselor, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia & District of Columbia, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland, and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. She is an approved supervisor in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She works with military service members, veterans with disabilities, children, adolescents, and families who have experienced various traumas. She has over ten years of professional experience, including community mental health, program & clinical supervision, program evaluation & creation, and providing direct services.

Kerri graduated from Johnson C. Smith University in 2004 with a BA in Criminal Justice. Since graduating from JCSU, she earned an MS in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Central University in 2007, a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Argosy University in 2014, and an Ed.D in Counselor Education and Supervision from Argosy University in 2018. Kerri is a Clinical Supervisor at Family Services Foundation, Inc in Landover Hills, MD. FSF works with clients with mental health diagnoses, deaf or hard of hearing, and developmental disabilities. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California & Virginia State University. Her greatest work of service is her service to her country as a Technical Sergeant in the DC Air National Guard.


 

Treasurer:
Dr. Keisha Grayson Rogers

Dr. Keisha Grayson Rogers, Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling at Winston-Salem State University, is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Qualified Supervisor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor.

Keisha has published and presented research on disability related issues, co-occurring disorders, clinical supervision, multicultural issues in counseling and has facilitated trainings locally and internationally in the aforementioned areas. Her current research interest is in the area of Black faculty experiences in Academia. Keisha has published on all of these topics in scholarly journals and academic textbooks, as well as  presented on these topics at state and national conferences and has been awarded funding to further her research. Keisha is also a practicing mental health counselor and clinical supervisor.

Keisha is the 2022 recipient of the Dr. Bobbie Atkins Research Award presented by the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns, a division of the National Rehabilitation Association, recognizing her volume of exemplary research and associated publications in the areas of multiculturalism, disability, and other marginalized communities. She is also the 2022 recipient of the Professional Writing and Research Award presented by the North Carolina Counseling Association, a state branch of the American Counseling Association. This award recognizes her contributions to the profession through significant writing and research. Keisha is the immediate past president of the National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns (NAMRC), a division of the National Rehabilitation Association.

Secretary:
Tyreeka Williams

 

Dr. Tyreeka Williams  is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at the illustrious North Carolina A&T State University. She joined the faculty after three years of teaching at Concordia University Irvine in Southern California and Montreat College. With a wide range of experience in higher education, private practice, addiction settings, and the K-12 school district, she is passionate about pouring into the future generation of school counselors, helping students identify and expound upon their calling into the counseling profession. Dr. Williams has served in several leadership roles in the Chi Sigma Honor Society at the masters, doctoral, and faculty level to include treasurer, secretary, and most recently as a Chapter Faculty Co-Advisor.

 

 

Dr. Williams earned a B.S. in psychology from Chowan University, an M.A. in human services counseling from Liberty University, and an M.A. in school counseling from Regent University. She also completed her Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision at North Carolina A&T State University, where she was awarded the Inaugural College of Education Equity, Access, and Advocacy Award. Her research interests include the supervision of novice school counselors, AI in counseling, and trauma-informed care for refugees and immigrants. A skilled communicator, Dr. Williams has been recognized as a Pete Warren Graduate Student Fellow by the Virginia Counselors Association and an Emerging Leader by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and North Carolina Counseling Association.

 

Member-at-Large:
Bill Stewart

Bill Stewart is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a National Certified Counselor
who works in private practice where he treats a variety of issues to include PTSD, anxiety,
depression, and gender dysphoria. Bill has completed Star Behavioral Health Tier 2 training with
a focus on assisting the mental health needs of the military community. Bill utilizes cognitive
behavioral therapy (CBT) to include the use of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for trauma.
Bill has been an active member of the NC Counseling Association to include serving as a board
member with responsibility for advocacy from 2022 to 2024. Bill has also served as President of
the Military and Government Counseling Association of North Carolina and is an active member
of SAIGE – NC. Bill was selected as the NC Counseling Association’s Beginning Counselor
Award in 2022 and he received the SAIGE NC Outstanding Advocacy Award in 2024.
Prior to becoming a counselor, Bill spent five years in the US Army where he served as a
paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division followed by 23 years in orthopedics at Johnson &
Johnson. Bill has remained active in healthcare as a consultant for Excelerant Consulting where
he supports small to mid-sized medical device companies with contracting.
Bill received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his Master of Business
Administration at Duke University. Bill completed his Master of Arts in Counseling at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Bill is also a board member at We Rock Charlotte, a
nonprofit that connects kids through music and provides a safe space for LGBTQ+ members.

 

 

Member-at-Large:
Rolanda Mitchell

Rolanda Mitchell, Ph.D., LCMHC-S, NCC, is an Assistant Professor in NC State University’s Counselor Education Program.  Dr. Mitchell began her career as a Professional School Counselor, gaining experience at the middle and high school levels in Wake and Mecklenburg public schools.  She earned her master’s degree in counseling from Wake Forest University, and her doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Dr. Mitchell is currently a licensed clinical mental health counselor and supervisor, with professional experience in outpatient therapy, school based mental health services, and in-home therapeutic services.  Dr. Mitchell is also an active member of professional organizations such as the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA).  She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Council on Multicultural Initiatives & Diversity (COMID), a standing committee within NC State’s College of Education.  Her research interests include clinical supervision, school counseling and equity/access in mental health services for historically marginalized groups.

Angela Brooks-Livingston

Angela Brooks-Livingston, MA, NCC, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS (she/they) is currently serving Wilkes County as a private practitioner. They are a graduate from Appalachian State University Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master's program with a concentration in Marriage and Family therapy, and certificates in Addictions Counseling and Expressive Arts Therapy. They worked in community mental health for 8.5 years in several positions including outpatient therapist, intensive in-home team lead, child services director, and associate center director. They started their private practice in August, 2020. Angela specializes in working with the LGBTGEQIA+ community, in particular transgender and gender expansive clients. Angela has been involved in NCCA since 2009, and served as NCCA president 2016-2017. Angela practices soul-care by camping with her partner, son, and dog, watching British television, practicing Julia Child recipes, reading, working puzzles, and listening to 80s hairbands.

Nicole Stargell

Nicole Stargell PhotoNicole Stargell, PhD, LCMHCA, LSC, NCC, BC-TMH is the Director of Information and Technology for the North Carolina Counseling Association.  Nicole is an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling at the University of North Carolina Pembroke.  She serves as the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Field Placement Coordinator, the Counseling Programs Testing Coordinator, and Chapter Faculty Advisor for the Phi Sigma Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota.  She is a member of the UNCP Institutional Review Board, the ACA Practice Brief Advisory Group, and the editorial board for Counseling Outcome Research & Evaluation.
